A strong patient-provider relationship should involve communication, collaboration, professionalism, and respect.
Consider looking for a provider who:
- Listens carefully to your concerns
- Explains diagnoses and recommendations clearly
- Discusses treatment options rather than assuming one approach
- Reviews the potential benefits and risks of treatment
- Encourages appropriate questions
- Considers your preferences
- Monitors your response to treatment
- Coordinates with other healthcare professionals when appropriate
- Respects privacy and confidentiality
- Practices within their professional scope and qualifications
Mental health treatment should be collaborative whenever possible.
You should understand what is being recommended and why.
